epilepsy is neurological disorder that affect the brain and how it function. it caused by abnormal activity in the brain that causes seizures.
there are two types of seizures epileptic and non epileptic. there are different type of epileptic seizures: focal, generalized (absence, tonic, atonic, clonic, myoclonic, and tonic- clonic. non epileptic seizures are called pnes (psychosomatic non epileptic seizures)
absence - characterized by staring into space or subtle body movements such as eye blinking or lip smacking.
tonic - cause stiffening of your muscles.
atonic - also known as drop seizures, cause a loss of muscle control, which may cause you to suddenly collapse or fall down.
clonic - associated with repeated or rhythmic, jerking muscle movements.
myoclonic - appear as sudden brief jerks or twitches of your arms and legs.
tonic-clonic - previously known as grand mal seizures, are the most dramatic type of epileptic seizure and can cause an abrupt loss of consciousness, body stiffening and shaking, and sometimes loss of bladder control or biting your tongue.
pnes (psychosomatic non epileptic seizures) can be caused by trauma, stress, or medical conditions
i deal with both epileptic and non epileptic seizures. i was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2018 and pnes in 2019. i was recently put on to a better medication that helps with epilepsy. there is no proven cure for pnes. however, there are techniques to heop manage it better
my pnes is trauma and stress based. takes the form of looking like a tonic clonic seizure or me just passing out. supression of stress is the reason that i haven't had a seizures since i was hospitalized in february of this year. also grounding exercises (like the five senses)
though supression is not the healthiest way to approach pnes (trust and believe i was upset with i found out that i had to learn how to suppress because my doctor to me so. i was really worried that it wouldn't work but it did.
however i wouldn't recommend it because it can cause a bunch mental health issues.
i'm lucky enough to be in a dbt therapy which is a therapy designed to address deep rooted trauma and issues.
my epilepsy and pnes causes me to have severe anxiety and depression; which i still struggle with to this day. epileptic seizures isn't something you should fear because it's not something you can personally control outside of meds.
pnes seizures isn't something you should fear either because is can be managed over time
