Of false prophets and healing!!!

I assess a young patient transferred from another hospital to my care with a neurosurgical condition.

A condition that is deadly and can leave a person with disability but with appropriate and timely intervention, patients do quite well.
So patient arrives, is in ICU- time is everything- so we have to rush him to theatre.

The family arrives after opening the file. There is a male relative with a phone- desperate to be at bedside of young man.

Anyway they are allowed-he is critical and I prefer to chat bedside
The gentleman is also busy with calls- has someone that he is speaking to on the other side on speaker.

He informs the person that he has transferred R5000 for the prayer.

The person on the other side- the false prophet- asks that he holds as he confirms receipt of the funds
This he must do before releasing the ‘lifesaving prayer’.

Anyway- he confirms- I was very curious, so I stuck around.

The young man asks if he can have the person pray over the phone which will be placed on patient’s ear.

This is now breaking the rules of ICU
Phones can interfere with the monitors- but we allow it- they are desperate.

Also it’s a touch and go situation- don’t want allegations of now allowing the prayer if youngster doesn’t make it.

But I am quite confident that he will be fine.

The man of God- prays and prophesies
The prophecy- firstly is wrong on ID of surgeon- his is a white male. The young man will in coma for a month- I am thinking that’s a lie- 14 days Max.

Anyway- I take the youngster to theatre- we operate he does well- extubated by day 2.

And I feel sorry for family being duped
The other story on the diversity as per @tumisole tweet.

A physician consults me on one of their patients. Elderly with a horrible neurosurgical condition.

I assess and advise surgery will be futile. So I opt not to operate.

The son and I have many counseling sessions
He asks me another day- what do you think of prayer?

I advise that I don’t comment on people’s religious preferences when it comes to healing. But I encourage whatever you believe will help you heal as long as it is not medicinal.

He becomes specific- miracle prayers.
Very nice guy- he gives me his context.

He tells me he of his dealings with one famous evangelical miracle worker.

He had said to me that the pastor has offered to come and revive the parent for a significant call out fee!!!
He has a contract with them- lights and sound and supplies some equipment as is needed.

He tells me of the amounts of money involved- that he has seen after offerings and a request on clearing wheelchairs and stretchers.
He says initially- he planned to discard these as the owners were healed and did not need them.

But was stopped and told they will be needed at another service- they need to kept well.

He goes on to say- he assessed these stretchers and wheelchairs and found them to brand new
I think this bit only came after about an hour of us chatting.

Long story short- I advised he follows whatever will heal him.

I told him what I know as a medic.

Miracle pastor never came- family agreed for deescalation of treatment and the old person rested.
I will not even go into the misfortune that befell me on the day those people from TB Joshua were repatriated and landed on the day when I was on call.

I had swapped a call and had the great misfortune of being on call that day.

And the holy water business!!!🤔
And do not be mistaken those ones from Brooklyn are within!!! Binnekant!😂😂😂
