ok I feel the need to educate american oomfs regarding “gringa/gringo” given the situation yesterday:
-it is NOT a slur
-it is NOT an insult
its just a way to referring to american people, regarding of skin color, it doesnt mean white person, it just means american +

+ the origin of the word comes from the mexican-american war, which I suppose is not taught in american schools as properly as it is in mexican schools. The american army would scream “Green, go!” as their uniforms were green, which resulted in the mexicanization of the word +

+ evolving into “gringo/gringa”. NOT an insult, it is just a way of referring to US citizens once again. DO NOT try to educate us on OUR language and history. The word has no bad intentions by itself.

The term was later spread throughout latinamerica, and has a different meaning in Brazil as far as I’m concerned due to language and cultural differences. Though the meaning explained in this thread pretty much applies for every hispanic country in Latin America. Thank you.
