They don't have to, but they prefer that and most wrestlers don't do them without the PR department approving it. Same with AEW. Most IMPACT/ROH is heading that way too. Just each one has their own media objectives and goals. https://twitter.com/AminAmbrose/status/1319703709140586496
WWE- I ask monthly, and often don't hear back, but on occasion get approved for stuff like Toronto or the Kofi Mania one. If a wrestler goes to them and asks for it, it's usually taken into consideration. If they set it up themselves, we just do it. They never get heat from it.
They usually prefer to do mainstream sports and media outlets or more WWE-friendly, though some wrestling outlets have gained more lately.

They seem pretty open about who they bring on NXT calls, as that's a different beast. We're always invited on those.
IMPACT - If you ask, there's a 90 percent chance you're getting who you ask for unless they just can't make it happen. They have a PR person on them these days, but didn't always used to.

They're super open about who they invite on the Press Pass stuff.
AEW- We also reach out to them monthly just to let them know we want to be considered. We usually land someone about every 6-7 weeks or so from them, and they also have PR people on the line.

They do the post-show scrums, which is a really awesome tough.
Obviously considering their spot, they also want to land more stuff in the mainstream outlets like WWE is doing. The funny thing is, a lot of the mainstream outlets they target aggregate wrestling news sites these days, too.
ROH- Usually at least a couple of times a month we're offered someone from ROH. Sometimes a list of availables to see if we want to follow up with someone we've had good chemistry with before, or to see if we want someone totally new.

They've started doing video, which is great.
Bellator- Bellator has a gigantic list of availables that they provide, but at the time I stopped doing MMA interviews they were primarily phoners. I'd imagine that's changed, but they give a wide array of outlets a huge selection of interview opportunities
UFC- I've never dealt with UFC, but any time I've interviewed their fighters, I've went to them directly. Never an issue with anyone being pulled.
Most of this is standard and you'd ideally deal directly with PR as opposed to directly with a signed talent. There are plenty of exceptions though.

Hope this helped clarify for those asking.
