ok background info, in 2017-2018, there were some protests that happened in iran. the protests started off being about the economic policies of the country, but soon became a protest against the regime and its supreme leader, khamenei

ali khamenei has been irans supreme leader since 1989. he came into power a decade or so after the iranian revolution in 1979 which replaced the shah, reza pahlavi, with ayatollah khomeini

the protests occurring were mainly peaceful, with some exceptions in certain parts of the country, but it still ended off with 23-25 protestors killed, 1 police officer killed, and over 4,972 people arrested.

one of those people arrested was navid afkari, who was charged for insulting the supreme leader, the regime, and the alleged murder of a police officer, hasan torkman.

hasan torkman was a secret agent of the armed forces who were tasked with silencing the protests.

there was no CCTV footage showing navid afkari committing the murder, there was no evidence linking him to it, and most of what was used was testimonials. despite all that, he was still arrested and sentenced to death.

he was persistent in saying he was innocent, near the end he said:

"[...] Everything that I am saying right now, is only here to let you know that if I ever get executed, in the 21st century and with all the human right organizations, the UN or security council or the whatever else,

an innocent human being, which had tried to the best of his might and fought, to have his voice heard, was hanged"

even then, he was forced to confess afterwards through torture, later taking it back and saying:

"I told the inspector that neither do I know the secret agent (that has been killed), nor have I heard his name! But under torture, and to save my family, and for Vahid (one of his imprisoned brothers), I gave them what they wanted."

despite admitting he was tortured to convince him to confess for a crime he didn't commit, and having an eye witness confirm that he had been tortured for it, he was still executed for no reason on the 12th of september 2020.

more recently, footage came out of a girl who was brutalized for being raped by her boss and protesting about it. the security guard in the footage is seen touching her breasts even as she's bleeding on the ground from a broken nose, with people around her hitting her.

she was taken to court and told to be quiet about her rape, because the man who raped her was powerful and had already abused other women.

this also brought about more discussion of the death of romina ashrafi, who was a 14 year old girl that was murdered by her father for trying to run away with a 35 year old man who was grooming her and getting caught.

now the problem causing all of this, the government!

currently, the two main figures in the government are ali khamenei, the supreme leader, and hassan rouhani, the president. the iranian government is mainly a theocracy, with the laws being based on religion, islam in this case

except this means that the government can use any protest against them as blasphemy as they are acting on the word of god. this gives them the excuse to arrest, execute and silence protestors who are trying to better the economy and state of the country.

during the 2019-2020 protests that were mainly about the economy of the country, the government brought out full tanks and machine guns onto the UNARMED, INNOCENT protestors.

death counts are messy to find, the interior ministry estimated around 200-225 protestors and bystanders were killed by the government, amnestry international estimates 304, and reuters estimates over 1500.

despite this, there were more that 7000 people arrested for them too.

basically, PROTESTING INSIDE THE COUNTRY IS DANGEROUS AND OFTEN DOES NOTHING BUT SCARE THE PEOPLE MORE. and even then, the information the outside gets often has a lot of stuff covered up by the government to hide what they're doing.

SO DON'T LISTEN TO WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS. AT ALL. they're trying to cover it up so they can continue living in luxury while the people of the country die.

AND FOR GODS SAKE JUST READ UP ON STUFF. i'm not asking for a lot, but the people in the country are basically fucked, and only more and more people will die unjustly if things continue the way they're going on now.

DON'T IGNORE IT JUST BECAUSE ITS NOT HAPPENING IN THE WEST.
