There's a new Borat movie out. I went to jail because of Borat. Well, kind of. Let me explain.
I tried to cycle across Central Asia as part of a round-the-world cycling trip. My bike was stolen in Kazakhstan. Then, I was robbed at gunpoint. I would have told the police, but it was the police who did it. It's that kinda place.
As a result, my visa expired on the day I was set to leave Kazakhstan by ferry for Azerbaijan. At the port, an official refused to let me go, questioning my visa. Things got heated. A policeman snatched my passport. I snatched it back. I got arrested.
While being driven to jail, I posted to facebook, "Going to jail. Fuck Kazakhstan. Borat was a documentary."
After a couple of days, I'm brought into a meeting room with a lawyer and a translator. We talk. While doing so, the lawyer looked me up on Facebook, read my comment, showed it to the translator, and they both just got up and left.
I was in jail for seven days until the British embassy got me out.

Moral: don't go to Kazakhstan. If you do, don't mention Borat.
