Sites that had tagging (tumblr) or a gallery (DA) got me in the habit of only posting my work once because it was accessible. Don’t do this on Twitter. Retweet and even repost your art often. Feeds are so linear and the lack of an archive means most people won’t scroll to see it.
You cannot treat twitter like a site dedicated to making sure your art gets seen because it isn’t. I noticed most people won’t even interact with posts that are days or weeks old because it’s considered irrelevant and we’re made to only keep up with the newest tweets coming in.
This is so damaging for artists because our brains are wired to not appreciate older work. On DA it wasn’t uncommon to get comments for weeks. On twitter after a few hours even, everyone moves on. I think it’s very necessary to reshare your work often if you’re an artist.
I have so many people who follow me but have hardly seen my entire body of work because they simply do not want to scroll or look for it due to how disorganized and linear our feeds are, often I can’t even load past a few days worth of tweets if someone is a frequent poster.
It’s horrible. I hate what it’s potentially doing to our attention spans and development as well but that’s another topic. My point is never feel ashamed or annoying to reshare your work often. You *have* to.
Also twitter deletes tweets and accounts left and right, it’s so easy to lose everything without a moments notice. Do not treat this site like any kind of gallery or archive!! Create one offsite if you must.
