"Harry, you're staring again."
Hermione's voice snapped him out of his thoughts. He wasn't even going to deny it. He was indeed watching Draco Malfoy from across the Great Hall.

"No. It's not that." Harry interrupted, eyes still on the blond who was just idly spreading butter on a piece of toast. "I think something happened."

pay attention to his surroundings.
"Harry is staring at Malfoy again."
Ron looked at Harry for a moment before his eyes flitted to Malfoy. He shrugged and went back to reading his magazine.
"He always does that," Ron said. "It's his daily 'Malfoy Watching' routine."

"I do NOT have a 'Malfoy Watching' routine!" Harry protested.
"You do."
"I don't."

the git's absence from the Quidditch field because, and I quote 'he always goes flying during Wednesday afternoon' and just 10 seconds ago you said that something must've happened to him."

Harry felt his face flush and heat up. Hermione was looking at him with a knowing
expression.
"I thought you weren't listening!" He spluttered. Ron just snickered and went back to eating.
Harry used his fork to poke around the beans on his plate. He was determined to prove his bestfriends wrong.
He was NOT going to look at Draco Malfoy.
Nope.

Nope.
His resolve lasted for a total of 5.5 seconds.
Harry couldn't help it. He just had to check and make sure that Malfoy was still there.
"That's it." Hermione said, setting down her utensils and pushing her plate away. "What is it, Harry? What's wrong with Malfoy?"

Harry hesitated. Should he tell her? She'll probably think that he's insane, that he's reverted back to his sixth year self. But he'd really rather not deal with Hermione's concerned looks for the rest of the day — or the semester for that matter.
"Something bad must've happened." Harry said, not even trying to stop himself from stealing another glance at the blond who was now just pushing his food around his plate. That deepened the furrow in Harry's brows.
"How do you know that? It's not like you're on speaking terms."

"It's the butter," Harry mumbled. "And toast."
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Malfoy prefers marmalade or jam when it comes to toast."
Harry could hear Ron mutter an exasperated "Oh here we go." from beside him.
"So?" Hermione asks.
This is ridiculuous. What he was about to say next

made better sense in his head but he doubts that that would be the case if his hypothesis is spoken out loud.
Harry took a deep breath before continuing.

Hermione looked at him like he grew a second head while Ron just patted his back as if he's sympathizing with him over something.

Later that day, Harry noticed Malfoy lag behind after their Transfiguration class. He was clearly waiting to talk to the Headmistress. Harry left the classroom but remained by the door to eavesdrop.
"What is it that you want to talk about, Mr. Malfoy?" McGonagall asked.

"I would like to ask for your permission to visit my mother at the Manor this weekend."
Malfoy spoke in a prim and calm tone but there was also a hint of...desperation? Concern?

Floo in my office. I trust that you are responsible enough to return to the school at a reasonable hour."
Harry heard Malfoy breathe a sigh of relief.
"Yes, Headmistress." Malfoy said, voice still laced with concern but it now held a hint of gratitude. "Thank you."

At the sound of shuffling and footsteps coming closer to the door, Harry bolted.
He ran to the other side of the corridor and sharply turned at the nearest corner to not get caught.

Later that evening, Harry skipped dinner and went to the Quidditich pitch where he found
Malfoy flying laps under the moonlight.
He joined him.
The blond was reluctant at first but he eventually accepted Harry's company when the latter challenged him to a Seeker's Game.
That was the first of many nights that Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy will spend together.
