"Making a Safe Space: How to Influence the Learning Climate"
https://cdmcd.co/3v3kDp

Moderated by @Armstrws & @MatiH_ID featuring @PCH_SF @gradydoctor @ChidaNatasha
First up, @PCH_SF presenting 4 keys to creating a positive learning climate:

1⃣Exhibit enthusiasm
2⃣Welcome & respect diversity
3⃣Model humility
4⃣Balance challenge & support

#IDWeek2020
How can you exhibit enthusiasm when teaching?

@PCH_SF provides 3 specific tips:
1⃣Introduce yourself & why you are excited
2⃣Learn students, residents, & fellows names
3⃣Have an optimistic attitude

#IDWeek2020
How can we create a welcoming environment that respects diversity?

@PCH_SF suggests:
1⃣Invite learners' thoughts (and make it safe to be wrong!)
2⃣Consider culture/other differences that affect participation
3⃣Communicate clear goals & expectations

#IDWeek2020
What phrases can encourage a good learning climate?

@PCH_SF provides some examples at #IDWeek2020
And my favorite topic, how can we model humility?

@PCH_SF points out that we have more respect for those who model humility by:
1⃣Admitting our limitations
2⃣Encourage questions & independent thought
3⃣Think aloud
4⃣Acknowledge insecurities!

#IDWeek2020
And what are some concrete examples of how we can model humility?

We need to admit that there is more than one way to do things and we don't always know "the" answer!

@PCH_SF
#IDWeek2020
Remember that multiple things impact the learning climate, including your organization & the physical space! @PCH_SF

#IDWeek2020
And how can we create a good learning climate for faculty? Let's support each other. @PCH_SF

#IDWeek2020
And now listening to @ChidaNatasha discussing implicit bias & microaggressions and how they impact learning climate.
#IDWeek2020
Microaggressions add up over time. While it may not seem like a big deal one time, experiencing them repeatedly is hugely problematic.

See this video for the full analogy:
Not sure what a microaggression looks like and why it's a big deal?

See these examples from @ChidaNatasha

This is at least my 2nd (maybe 3rd) time seeing this talk by @gradydoctor on upstanding.

It gets even better each time.
#IDWeek2020
What stops us from being an upstander?

@gradydoctor points out 4 factors:
1⃣Diffusion of responsibility
2⃣Ambiguity
3⃣Perceived cost
4⃣Apprehension

#IDWeek2020
Which of the following do you NOT have to consider on a daily basis?

Honestly, I don't have to think about many of these. I recognize my privilege and need to consider the impact of others' experiences.

@gradydoctor
#IDWeek2020
And how can we be better upstanders?

Using the 5D approach from @gradydoctor:
✅First, display discomfort!

✅Be direct
✅Distract
✅Delegate
✅Delay

#IDWeek2020
I always love getting homework from @gradydoctor

3 perspectives I don't have to consider:
1⃣Race
2⃣Sexual orientation
3⃣Weight

Time for me to start reflecting on others' lenses and expanding my perspective.
