Seeing Coyote is trending and amazed at the number of people who don't know about the secret 1960s government project that took place in Arizona.

In an attempt to deal with the tunnels in Vietnam, Robert McNamara commissioned a project to increase the intelligence of dogs. 1/

2/ They picked Chihuahuas because those were already smart enough to hate everyone, hence the project's location near the Mexican border and a ready source of test subjects.

Unfortunately, some of the Chihuahuas went into heat, drawing the attention of of other nearby canines -

3/ desert coyotes. (little c)

The hybrid offsprint were kept in the lab, but segregated due to being bigger.

Long story short, the Choyote mix got the Chihuahua's hate, the coyote's cleverness, *and* the increased intelligence being bred into the project.

4/ They broke out of the lab, killing most of the scientists and guards, and escaped into the surrounding desert, continuing to interbreed with the native coyote.

Given their hatred for their former captors, they dropped the Choyote label and took on only their free identity.
