KOLA BOU OR NABAPATRIKA

Worshipped in Bengal during Durga Puja. Also called Banana bride, she is represented in a Banana plant and worshipped as a Devi on Saptami.

She is given a ritual bath and placed on Ganesha’s right side during Durga Puja.

Kola Bou is a symbolic representation of 9 types of leaves or Nabapatrika A bunch of 8 plants is tied on the trunk of the banana tree. All 9 plants together constitute Kola Bou. She is,thus, the plant form of Devi Durga. Each tree represents a different form.

3. Bel gaach or wood apple-Shiva
4. Daalim gaach or pomegranate-Raktdantika
5. Maankochu or Aram-Chamunda
6. Rice-Lakshmi

8. Kochu gaach or colacassia- Kalika
9. Jayanti gaach or Sal- Kartiki
After the bathing ceremony Nabapatrika is adorned in red bordered white saari and vermilion is smeared on its leaves. She is worshipped with flowers and sandalwood paste and placed on the right side of Ganesh.
