Not knowing what to expect with the title alone, and the fact that it has an odd alternate title, I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this one. I again feel lucky that I stumbled onto a hidden found footage gem of a movie.
And, it’s not a bunch of annoying American teenagers running around with cameras - it’s two somewhat annoying Brits in a remote village investigating a supposed miracle.
The Vatican sent them, so right away I became interested in the possibility of demonic presence and something more. And there is definitely that.
I will say this about Borderlands, much like another title in the list, Occult Angel, they both take advantage of Britain’s occult history with paganism and pre-Christian cults that worshipped ancient animal based deities.
This one has a great sense of disarming calm for most of the movie, and I say that because it seems tame when you get to the end and think of how insane the entire movie could have been, but instead used the opposite to set it all up.
Many of the common genre tropes are present, from a smart ass behind one of the cameras, to a drunken outing to show the limits of the camera set ups. But, even though it does all seem trite, it still works.
The charm of the cast and the location really elevates the movie, and an interesting story makes another found footage trope soar.
