Still wondering what SLAPPs lawsuits are? According to the official online case management system for Malta courts, there are still 25 active defamation cases against #DaphneCaruanaGalizia.

Together with @ecpmf and @freepressunltd, we are monitoring these cases and we have compiled a list of all active cases. First background: Daphne Caruana Galizia was sued for the first time in 1994 and during her professional life 67 defamation lawsuits were filed against her.

At the time of her death, she was facing 47 active civil and criminal libel suits filed in various jurisdictions, including Malta and the United States.

Nineteen civil cases were brought by Silvio Debono - the owner of the db Group. Caruana Galizia alleged that the group had been handed public land to develop into real estate at well below market value.

Two cases were brought by a Minister, Konrad Mizzi and another two by Keith Schembri, then the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff. Schembri eventually dropped the cases. One case was filed by the then Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat.

Four cases were brought by another Minister, Chris Cardona, and by his policy aide, Joseph Gerada. The rest were brought by numerous powerful politicians, and by government and state authority officials and business leaders.

Due to Cardona’s and Gerada’s cases, at the time of her assassination, Daphne Caruana Galizia’s bank accounts were frozen. As a result of her death, five criminal defamation cases were dropped automatically.

During the period – April 1, 2019 to October 20, 2020 – in total 160 court hearings were scheduled in all defamation cases against Daphne Caruana Galizia, out of which 73 hearings and 87 adjourned.
