- Worked 2 jobs, ASDA & Chip Shop
- Continued with just Chip Shop at 40hrs moving from houseshare to houseshare in the tiniest rooms in falmouth - lowest costing room I found was £275pcm, incred but fucking awful living environments
- At this point barely getting any time to draw https://twitter.com/litebox_info/status/1319012658146910212
or getting any jobs of worth.
- Eventually felt like I was earning enough to part time illo, part time chip ship, but only bc my life in falmouth was so cheap, my rent was nothing compared to big city rent
- I didn't move back home until 2yrs after graduating & only for 3 months
- I think choosing not to move to a city was essential in my savings & ability to part time illo & part time chip shop. I had enough money to get by.
- When I was home for 3 months, I did an artist residency, my first rent break, mum didn't charge me
- Primary school hours & no chip shop meant I could do commissions after 3pm on weekdays, still not earning enough to full time
- I applied for an MA purely to be funded to live, not bc I had 100% interest & thought "it would be easy" - I was wrong, it was hard and a lot, BUT
Doing the MA did exactly what I wanted. When I first moved to Bristol we moved in with Dans parents for 3 months, £100 a month, essentially another rent break.
- I did full time education alongside commissions, moved into own flat - expenses so high because BIG CITY LIFE
- I got a term grant that balanced out my commissions
- I only started earning enough (in my eyes) to go full time, without rent breaks, without MA, without part time jobs, last year - 4th year freelancing.
- This is mostly because I save to fuck, otherwise it wouldn't work
- I was the higher earner in my relationship last year, that has now changed, but we've always been equals in terms of rent & bills etc.
- Saying that applying for a mortgage, I was basically void in all discussions even though my salary last year was UKs "average salary"
- What I earn now is higher than I ever thought I could on illo, and it's not even gr8, lol. But I'm happy.
- Also can I just say - and this is not same for anyone - getting agent rep has been essentially in earning more, for me.
this thread is stupidly long & i imagine nobody will read it, but yes............ lol. also i was earning so little & an MA student when getting to bristol that no flats would allow us to rent bc i wasn't trusted. we found a landlord who didn't give a fuck ...
... but if it wasn't for him i don't know how i would've found anywhere. i was denied from every place we tried to get bc of my low earnings, which fucking SUCKED and was scary.
