Today marks one year since 39 Vietnamese migrants were found dead in a lorry in Essex. Join us in a show of remembrance and solidarity: post a photo with #RememberTheEssex39.

In remembering lives brutally cut short by borders, racism, and capitalism, we continue to resist.

1/
The two lorry drivers have been charged with “conspiracy to assist unlawful migration” and manslaughter. But focusing on individual ‘smugglers’ distracts us from systemic analysis. 2/ https://daikon.co.uk/blog/essex-39
Throughout history, imperial powers and big corporations have entered poor countries to exploit people and resources in order to extract wealth.

Working class communities bear the brunt of this extraction. When they seek out better life elsewhere, they are violently excluded. 3/
The British government claims to welcome 'real refugees’.

At the same time, it is actively investing in technologies and partnerships that further securitise its borders and prevent entry. There are no safe routes for anyone, including asylum seekers. 4/
In the midst of a public health crisis, the government has continued operating violent policies like No Recourse to Public Funds and detention.

The extension of the Hostile Environment to the NHS further prevents undocumented migrants from accessing medical support. 6/
Ultimately, if we want to prevent more deaths, we need to work towards abolishing borders, starting with practical solidarity resisting their entrenchment in our daily lives.

Mutual aid organising in light of the pandemic has provided ways of imagining a different future. 7/
The Remember to Resist Campaign will continue to agitate for abolition—because we know that nothing short of the dismantling of borders, prisons, racism, capitalism, and imperialism, will make life liveable for many migrants and people of colour. 8/
If you live in or around Hackney, Hackney Chinese Community Services is holding a shrine to commemorate the deaths of the Essex 39 on Friday (23 October), which you can visit anytime from 10am to 5pm at 28-32 Ellingfort Road, London E8 3PA. 9/ https://www.hackneychinese.org.uk/post/essex-39-first-anniversary-commemoration
