Football () has hundreds of terrible misses and own goals. But you don’t tend to see as many bloopers from other sports.

Here’s an exception: Daniel Jones for the Giants in last night’s football ().

Here’s one from rugby. The equivalent of an open goal miss.

Will Carling is probably thankful he had an otherwise successful career, otherwise he’d be rugby’s Rosenthal.

Never seen this before, here’s Patrik Štefan of the Dallas Stars missing the empty net against the Edmonton Oilers in 2007, only to see them to go up the other end and equalise.

Luckily for him, the Stars won the shootout.

This must be the Athletics equivalent of an own-goal.

Former world champion Hagos Gebrhiwet miscounts the laps in a 5000m race last year. Imagine that feeling when he realises he’s just heard the bell.

He finished 10th. Oh mate.

Another rugby one because this is too good. Look at the time, look at the score.

Rory Burns must have felt like such a tit after this. His face on the replay made me laugh out loud, poor guy.

It’s the World Series. The Dodgers are 2-1 up (best of 7) and opponents are down to their last out in the 9th innings.

Then they do this. Two separate fumbles (from Chris Taylor and Will Smith) on one play to hand the victory to the Rays.

Brad Marchand at the beginning of the year, messing up the shootout spectacularly.

If he’d missed the puck entirely it would have been fine, he’d get another go. Haha, gutted.

Here’s another one from the NHL, where the nature of the sport makes total chaos possible.

Here, a delayed penalty means an extra man for Vancouver and they use the opportunity to pull the goalie - as soon as Calgary touch the puck it’s dead. Not everyone got the memo.

Ok, this doesn’t quite fit the theme of the thread. Basketball doesn’t have the huge fails quite so much as every point is so much less impactful.

Hard to think of too many big cricket bloopers, as dropped catches are so commonplace.

But given the moment, this was an absolute belter. Nathan Lyon fails to run out Jack Leach and England win the test.

Another sport which I didn’t expect to feature - taking loads of putts isn’t quite as intrinsically funny as some of the rest of the clips in the thread.

But this from Mike Clayton has to be seen.
