Few days ago, I made a statement here that you cannot change a system or society you do not understand. A reformist, must understand the structure and the powers at play. In Nigeria, we run an ineffective centralized form of government. Power is at the centre, 200m people..
6 regions, 36 states and 774 LG. In this same country, we have the military and the paramilitary forces actively involved in daily combats with terrorists, bandits, kidnappers in at least 18 states of the federation. Ethnic clashes in Kaduna, Banditry in the Northwest, kidnapping
In major parts, terrorism in the North East, farmer/ herder clashes in the North central and some parts of the South. Major insecurity challenges, in some states people cannot sleep at night with their eyes closed. It's a reality and everything ends up at the centre.
It's a bad system because everyone depends on the centre for solution. In the south, we had our legitimate demands, EndSars and end police brutality. It could have been end banditry, end terrorism, end kidnapping, end all sorts of insecurity challenges. They are harsh realities..
We are all throwing problems into a basket at the center which is not designed to respond effectively so it is important to identify quick wins when we see it.
Moving forward, we need to dissolve power at centre and decentralise some activities. A constitutional review..
Strip as many things as possible from the centre, the police including the supreme court. The gestation period for cases at the supreme court is 6 - 12 years. That's grave yard justice...
Revenue sharing has to change and states must take charge of their resources.
Everything starts now, engage and vote the right lawmakers who can change the constitution and accelerate development.
If the constitution is not changed, we will continue to dance around in circles till eternity. It's a system designed to be ineffective.
