Good morning my people. I’ve had some time to collect my thoughts so thought to share this.
First of all, the events of Tuesday 20.10.20 wasn’t anything I thought could happen. That fire will be opened on peaceful protesters, sitting on the floor & singing the national anthem.
I didn’t imagine it. And in many ways it still feels unreal. But what is undeniably real is the grief of the families who lost someone that day & in the chaos that followed. My deepest condolences to everyone mourning. No one deserves to die that way. And we will not forget them.
In the last two weeks, we came together to pursue one goal #EndSARS . Every morning, we woke up with that singular objective. Many took to the streets to express their constitutional right and some worked at the back end making sure peaceful protesters had enough resources.
When people started getting arrested, lawyers were provided. When people started getting injured, ambulances were provided. Everyone came together to organize in a way that I have never seen happen in Nigeria before and that made me so proud of this generation. So so proud.
People have me asking me and the different groups I’ve worked with “what next?” but I’m flipping that over to you. What next for you?
I saw you organize peaceful protesters in your community. I saw you fundraise and donate. I saw you passionately demand for #EndSARS . You did it.
We were able to send a strong message because everyone played their part and the demand for accountability was decentralized. It wasn’t about a particular group of people. It was all of us saying “hey! enough is enough”.
So “what next?” is a question for all of us to answer.
You can see what happens when we have bad governance. People die - whether on the streets or in their homes or in police custody. Fire is opened on peaceful protesters, people are killed and it is not even acknowledged by leadership. Is this the type of country we want? No way.
I’ve heard the “let’s all form a political party”. Well, if we lump every young person into one political party then who keeps that one political party accountable? We need to take this knowledge that we have power and decentralize it in our communities.
Fear.

A leadership that instills fear into people probably doesn’t have anything much to offer anyway.

“What next” is us collectively building the type of country we want to live in brick by brick. I am energized & do not feel defeated at all. We strategize & we move. #EndSARS
RIP to the fallen. We will not forget you.
And yes, a memorial is in the works. More details soon.
