@JoeBiden, glad you'll rejoin Paris Accord. But this "make China abide by what they agreed to" bluster? China is already meeting its Paris targets & has committed to go beyond them. A coercive "tough on China" approach is counterproductive on climate issues. #Debates2020

Instead, we must cooperate with China if we're to make the transformational progress we need to mitigate & adapt to climate change. As the 2 largest carbon emitters, US & China can catalyze & mobilize int'l action when we work together as we did during the Paris negotiations. 2/5
@JoannaILewis explains how we could do this through US-China partnerships on affordable clean energy technologies and through parallel investment & aid projects to help the developing world pursue less carbon-intensive growth: https://quincyinst.org/2020/09/18/a-renewed-agenda-for-green-technology-and-development/ 3/5
Another important form of such collaborative effort would be for the US & China to deliberately coordinate domestic targets and standards. @BarbaraFinamore explains how we could do this in the area of clean transportation: https://quincyinst.org/2020/09/18/why-america-and-china-must-cooperate-on-clean-transportation/ 4/5
Instead of "tough on China" bluster, we need visionary leadership that harnesses this kind of creative thinking about how to pursue positive-sum "great power cooperation" that will further the US & China's shared interests in combating climate change, pandemics, and more. 5/5
