I am generally not against making country personifications. In fact, making them is sort of a cultural landmark itself. Humans have been summarizing their countries and nations with One Person/One Symbol for a very long time.
And if you’re gonna make a comic series about country gijinkas, then obviously, you’re gonna make historical references to them. And they’ll have to be represented in a somewhat cartoony way.
Explaining war between two countries and using only two “avatars” / “puppets” to tell the story is gonna look stupid no matter what.
So /Hetalia/ chose to explain it in ways that are sometimes less, and sometimes more offensive, depending on who you ask.

People always hate and argue about what’s wrong with Hetalia but to me it seems like there are two opposing sides in the conflict.
“Hetalia shows too much war”
and
“Hetalia doesn’t show enough war”

and

Some people argue that Hetalia fixated on the WW2 too much and if they simply ignored wars altogether and just made it a slice of life harmless comedy, it would’ve been better.
Some people argue that Hetalia should’ve showed racism, torture, gore and rape to really show how bad

the war is.
And I kind of get both of them, and I kind of don’t.
But out of the two, I’d much prefer a slice of life comedy with some harmless stereotypes, and mostly interesting trivia about countries,
rather than WW2 and apartheid with googoo eyed anime boys.

If people want to learn and see how gruesome wars and racism are, then they should watch literal hundreds of movies that take the situation seriously and manage to dramatize it without immediately becoming offensive. Or read books. Generally, read books. Read books stop anime.
Personally I refuse to accept anything prior to like the 3rd season as canon because yeah the axis powers segment is kind of offensive.
I don’t generally like media that spoonfeeds you and tells you very clearly what is right and what is wrong. But the fact that Hetalia was mostly watched by people under 16 is what caused a really awful phase of racism and yaoi paddle shit sprinkled on top of it.
Does, does that tweet even make sense? It’s 5am but I can’t sleep so I’m talking about hetalia.
Moral of the day.

I don’t have particularly close and intimate feelings about Hetalia. It never was a hyperfixation or anything. I generally don’t love and support Hetalia fans or Hetalia itself aside from my few friends who I know have their own self indulgent wish-fulfilling AUs of it. and such.
The reason why I started this thread like that is because I know some people have decided to be completely against country gijinkas of any sort because “they will inevitably turn out offensive sooner or later”
But I don’t think that’s true.
But I don’t think that’s true.
I think people definitely have the capacity to tell stories about cultures and and history that isn’t their own, without inevitably becoming offensive.
But still you should interact and ask for feedback from all kinds of people to make sure that what you make isn’t insensitive.

They absolutely hate having their work compared to Hetalia but I am once again shouting out @.lullindo for making country gijinka comics that don’t try to be too serious and don’t try to ~retell ww2~ and their designs are really endearing.
