common misconceptions about hetalia:

1. they are humanised countries

yes and no. they are an amalgamation of their countries’ stereotypes, but have separately developed personalities. they don’t represent their government nor their leader. they are seperate individuals.
2. hetalia is about the hoIocaust

I’m mentioning this one bc I feel like it mostly comes from people who have not seen the show? I believe some of Germany’s old attire included things worn at that time but the anime and manga never show or even mention it +
literally the only time n4zi germany is mentioned is one joke about germany asking people to “raise their hands in a way that did not allude to his countries’ dark past” which could be seen as insensitive but is not a portrayal the way people describe it.
3. hetalia fans don’t know about/ excuse problems in their fandom

as a show that deals with cultural identity, history and race, it is not hard for lines to be crossed and real events to be woobified to the point where portrayal of historic events is called “angst” +
especially from privileged fans in their preteens. HOWEVER, the majority of people in the hetalia fandom have been here for years, and been through this time and time again. this is literally one of the main things we talk about and it’s weird for non-fans to act like we don’t
4. hetalia is called axis powers

the name was changed a bit into the series mostly due to backlash - it’s now called “world stars”, “world twinkle” or just hetalia. I don’t think it’s ok to be called APH, however it was only named that bc the main characters are the axis.
5. hetalia has humanised nazi Germany

again each character is an individual. Germany doesn’t represent Nazi germany just by existing. the fandom definitely did similar things themselves but if we want to talk about humanised n4zi germany, please look at countryhumans
6. people are in the hetalia fandom because they never learned

a majority of us hyperfixate on hetalia and are unable to leave. for us, all we can do is try our best to think critically and reform hetalia and it’s fandom. since it’s not inherently bigoted, reform is possible
7. hetalia is inherently problematic

this is largely opinion based, but I want to share my take. hima ( creator ) is certainly bigoted, and the majority of us agree on this too. Some examples are the majority of countries being pale and men, the first seasons having the chars +
in military uniforms, and his pro-imperiaIist portrayal of sk. hearing “a show built off of stereotypes” doesn’t really do justice to the fact that hetalia is largely a commentary on stereotypes - the separation from the real world is intentional.
while these things are true, the biggest point for me is that the characters CAN be separated from the source. They are individuals from their government and the events in the “story” - which is why au and fiction is so popular. people are often attached to these characters
separately, and it is possible to do that without glorifying military or war, because it is not an inherent part of them or their design. This is also why a lot of people use names instead of country labels. this is why “historical hetalia” as a label was created.
It’s no secret that these topics can and HAVE been easily manipulated and it was the wrong place for young people to be. but having been here for years, the majority of us can navigate these things safely and drive out people who expose their ignorances.
It is largely up to experience and opinion, and I don’t blame a lot of people for disliking it, I just want to be on the same page and ensure we’re all having the same discuss. please keep in mind a lot of us literally cannot give up these characters so we can only do our best.
8. south korea was removed to save face

south korea was literally removed after a huge uproar from both korean citizens and THE NATIONAL BOARD of sk. if youre not korean or japanese stfu about this topic in general hima deserved all the backlash he got from that!
9. hetalia will never change

speaking of the show and not the fandom itself, it actually came under new management which is why it became better and less offensive over the course of seasons. it was one guy's comic and has been moved to a whole team
10. all hetalia fans like to cosplay in military uniform and go to insensitive places

obviously hetalia creates a vessel where stuff like this is way more common and used to be ENCOURAGED, but those people are few and far between and condemned by the majority.
my issue with this is - ofc hetalia creates MORE oppurtunities for these things to happen, but EVERY SINGLE FANDOM HAS BAD PEOPLE? and im not saying that to deflect but to make my point clearer that this is not 'fandom standard' anymore
people who are able to like it with critical thinking should not be compared to n@zi cosplayers and its weird that no one has that nuance. im scared of some fans i might attract by saying this but its true ? i dont even talk about the west european countries that much
what im saying is that yes hetalia is inherently flawed and therefore its easier for these things to happen - these are not topics kids at the time or even now can understand, we STILL have big artists getting reprimanded for drawing n@zi germany +
but just like black butler had people shipping p3dophelia, just like OHSHC spawned alot of transphobic jokes, just like bnha makes alot of people draw nsfw of minors, just like yuri on ice caused alot of people to fetishise mlm, +
something that was not inherently part of the source material still made people feel justified, on such a large scale it began to define the fandom. again, this is easier for hetalia, but every fan is not inherently terrible because the source material obliges some.

anyone asking why I didn’t put that hetalia is satire or smth.. bc the comic itself and especially the first ones were def offensive... I have to read through them again b4 I’d make an argument for this but basically I am NOT team “hetalia is 100 percent fine”
yeah this is not even half true.. please at least watch an ep before making these claims. there are other ACTUAL things to dislike the show for https://twitter.com/CANNIBALNIKI/status/1319300449573523457?s=20
11. Hetalia is about/ignores war

again, something commonly said by people who haven’t seen or read it. The overwhelming bulk of history in hetalia is random or quirky facts in countries’ history, and everything else is just the characters interacting generally +
If I remember correctly tragedies aren’t excessively spoken about, and some might say this is “ignoring it” but I think the writer knew what he was doing to not include atrocities in a comedy series. It’s just not appropriate and to say he’s ignoring them doesn’t acknowledge +
the fact that it would be tone deaf to present it that way. Again I don’t like the original series and I have to rewatch it to be sure of what I’m saying, but saying that hetalia is about war leads to a lot of misinformed posts. Literally 90% of the series is people fucking about
