for everyone who thinks nct’s actions ARENT that big of a deal: let me tell you why they are — from a desi nctzen:
the two issues that came up today were
1. Taeyong and Xiaojun’s gestures mocking south Asians/desis at the end of their make a wish comeback stage today
2. Taeyong, Mark, and Baekhyun’s colorist remarks to Lucas in their recent Mtopia episode

1. why were ty and xj’s gestures problematic?
To simply put it: bc they were stereotyping. This isn’t the first time idols have used that gesture to mock Indians. I’ve seen blackpink, sunmi, and many other idols do the same thing. It is so normalized in s. Korea to imitate +

+ Indians in this way. That shit hurts. To know that I’ve been reduced down to these hand gestures is really upsetting. To know that that’s all my favs think of or know of when it comes to my culture. Desis deal w/ this shit our entire lives. We sit there and everyone makes fun +
+ of our culture and our religion. The hand gestures ty and xj did have roots in classical Indian dance. I’ve been doing classical dance for YEARS and not only is it one of the oldest forms of art in the world but it is extremely religious. by mocking our dancing, they are— by +
+ extension— mocking our religion. It’s disrespectful and I’m sick and tired of seeing this shit on my timeline every week.
2. discussing SuperM’s colorist remarks
Colorism has been ingrained in Asia ever since they were colonized. It’s so common that it’s normalized, and that’s why so many idols’ colorist comments are swept under the rug— bc it’s “normal”, it’s “no big deal”. And yeah, colorism is +
Colorism has been ingrained in Asia ever since they were colonized. It’s so common that it’s normalized, and that’s why so many idols’ colorist comments are swept under the rug— bc it’s “normal”, it’s “no big deal”. And yeah, colorism is +
+ a result of society and its ideals, but we HAVE to work to get rid of colorism. I’ve seen so many colorist remarks against Kai of exo, haechan, and lucas. Time and time again, people attack their skin color like it’s a bad thing. Why? +
+ this is a problem bc COLORISM IS ROOTED IN ANTIBLACKNESS. Colorist comments come from the subconscious belief that being darker means you are less intelligent, less deserving of respect, and it’s massively fucked up.
EVERYONE has to actively work to dismantle colorism. That means you and me, but it also means these idols have to get rid of their biases and stereotypes. They have giant, worldwide platforms, and they need to be respectful.
Idols are public personalities. They are people who have power and persuasion under their hands. What they say can impact people more than they think. If they’re gonna be public personalities, it’s their job to learn abt what they can and can’t do or say.
god this was long. To all the desis and black kpop stans, this shit sucks. I hope we can get through to SM so that they do something about all this. If you need to take a break from twitter or kpop, I totally get that. I had to say something by all of this bc it’s been in my +
+ head all day and I couldn’t focus bc I couldn’t help but feel so hurt by everything that’s happened today.
