My dear partner Polyana Oliveira from Viare Travel has been working with us from Rio Encantos for a few years and we are very found of which other's work and moto.
Polyana is currently working on an awesome cook book involving recipes from her trusted partners and local experts Brasil wide. She invited me to take part on her book sharing the recipe of my favorite drink: the Brasilian Caipirinha.
Check out her article below and have this exclusive look, before the book launching.
Kelly Tavares is a “carioca da gema” and I have been working with her for several years. She is also one of my most trusted local partners.
As a tour guide, she operates different experiences in Rio de Janeiro and her background in arts management makes it so she can manage incredibly creative tours.
When I tested out one of her tours, it was in the Port Region, where she was born, and it was a black history walking tour, which is called, “Little Africa.” It’s a key tour to fully learn about the history of the city from the trade of enslaved peoples to the founding of the…
…favelas, and she guides it expertly, pointing out places she frequented as a child, making it that much more special.
Another special thing about Kelly – is her home - and how she and her mother maintains a tradition of the hospitable black community in the Port Region of yore as well – it is a communal home, which welcomes guests (both short and long term) from around Brazil and the world.
And when you first arrive to her home, she expertly prepares a welcome drink – a classic caipirinha.
After years making it and spending years searching for the best places to score a good cocktail, she decided to share her love for cachaça and its signature drink, incorporating its history and flavors in a historic walking tour in the city center of Rio de Janeiro, called…
…“Caipirinha Route.” The tour involves stopping at two different bars to learn about cachaça production, the history of the spirit, the different kinds available, and also where you take a shot (or three) of this variety of cachaças.
This is the perfect tour for after visiting exhausting more “touristy,” sights in the morning, to unwind with good drinks, interesting conversations, and more opportunity to learn – about history, and mastering cocktail making skills.
In case you’re not sure what I’m talking about – here’s a mini lesson from Kelly, so when you prepare your own caipirinha, you can impress guests with your cachaça knowledge!
Cachaça, pronounced “kashasa,” is a hard liquor (between 38% and 48% alcohol) and made from the distillation of fresh sugarcane juice.
It’s been made since the 1500s, and it’s the 3rd most consumed spirit in the world (with an estimated 99% drank in Brazil… which shows how much we enjoy it).
And for anyone who is unsure of what a caipirinha actually is, It’s Brazil’s national cocktail, made with Cachaça, sugar and lime.
How to make the perfect caipirinha? Preparing a caipirinha is apparently quite simple but in practice, to make a good caipirinha, there are some essential tips you must follow, Kelly elaborates in her recipe.
Keep following us and get the Caipirinha recipe on the next post. See you!
