The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says that no state may “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.” This ought to be enough to outlaw solely elective abortions and overturn Roe v. Wade. I hope to see it happen. HOWEVER...1/7
HOW Roe v. Wade is overturned may be just as important as IF it is overturned. Why? Because ending purely elective abortions will take more than a change of law. It will take a change of hearts. Legal rulings don’t change hearts. 2/7
The majority of people in the U.S. favor the legalization of at least some elective abortions. That means that even if Roe v. Wade is struck down, it will take a lot to end these abortions. An endless string of legal challenges and loopholes will appear. 3/7
And even if these abortions become illegal, some will still seek them out illegally. So truly ending this plague of death means convincing the culture to value life and acknowledge the personhood of the unborn. 4/7
Here’s my concern: even if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade thanks to the addition of Barrett, it will be correctly perceived that an immoral president and a hypocritical Senate brought it about. We are in major ends justify the means territory, and the world knows it. 5/7
So when John Piper or anyone else says that we need to be concerned about the character of Republican leaders, they are right, because the Court is not going to end abortion: Christian witness is going to end abortion. In recent years, the witness of the Church has been poor. 6/7
I’m not telling you how to vote. I’m not endorsing a party. I’m saying we need to pray and consider how we will really bring this culture of death to an end. I doubt we can save souls by selling our souls. 7/7
