I love Cezanne because he exposed the truth of drawing

Most people look sideways at his "drawing skills" - his funny ellipse of a cup or elongated arms etc

Whether deliberate or not....none of that interests me

But what he did was massive.....
Because of Cezanne's lack of so called "natural drawing ability" he had to work it all out the hard way

He had little to fall back on

Sometimes natural ability or fluency can cause a lot of damage

Art history is littered with skilled artists that did not know what to do
Cezanne climbed the mountain and discovered the truth

That if you want to create the illusion of depth on a flat surface then you must first pay respect to that flat surface

This is THE fundamental lesson that unites all successful artworks from cave painting to present day
Unlike artists before him who knew this but took it for granted

Cezanne took it seriously

The purity of his approach created a new pictorial world

Where one stroke of paint has two functions simultaneously

To reaffirm the flatness

And to create the illusion of depth
The dual function of a single stroke is almost like quantum physics!!

It exists in two places at once

If you don't pay respect to the flatness then your image will only ever be imposed upon it

Not the same thing

Photorealists are shit at drawing for this very reason
Here endeth the lecture!

But Cezanne is news that stays news

And one that most painters today chose to ignore
Tomorrow I will talk about the other great love of my life.....

Pablo Picasso
