we don't talk about this scene and how this, in a way, shows us gon's fears and his thoughts and reasoning behind finding ging: a long ramble of a thread
okay so i didn't remember this scene until i made a gon fc and it's just really interesting to see gon's interpretation of ging and his fears regarding all of that. gon himself tbh doesn't really know ging as a person or even dad, compared to deeper dynamics such as mito and gon.
he's instead more of a highly-regarded stranger, someone on a pedestal, who does great things and just someone he has to live up to. this might be my take but i don't really think gon went after ging in a "i miss my dad and want to meet him" but more of a +
"my dad left me because his job was more important than family, so now i'm curious and set on finding him to prove my worth". i also read a meta on this but to sum it up, gon finding ging is, in gon's eyes, the greatest hunt. (link to meta down below) https://twitter.com/kiiillugon/status/1313546901053214721?s=20
+ a screenshot from meta here btw but basically, all of gon's trauma and self-worth view of himself ultimately spirals from ging's abandonment, and gon is shown to believe that he was left because he wasn't of great importance compared to other things including being a hunter.
this leads to a load of issues, (hating weakness, failure, being dangerously reckless, feeling inadequate, only feeling worthy when he's helping or with other ppl, etc) and in a way, hunting ging is a way to prove to ging AND himself that he isn't any of those things.
he's willing to go to any length to meet ging's challenges head on, no matter the cost or how long it takes, to be successful, to prove that he's worth something, that he's not weak or a failure. that's why he's so self-destructive throughout the series, and why it's shown in +
this scene how much he doesn't want to fail in this hunt. if he fails, if he falls off of those stairs and isn't able to get to ging's level, then maybe ging was right to leave him. then maybe he really isn't worth anything, and then what? would he be anything after that?
this scene is so much more to understanding that bc it's one of the few glimpses we have to what goes on with gon internally. gon himself uses actions and words to communicate, and we never really see his internal views on things. instead we see gon through a third person lense,
which is why it's so interesting at least to me to look into small things like this and understand him better. it's smart of togashi, and makes gon a complex character beneath his simplicity.
ALRIGHT I'M DONE NOW um that made no sense omg the meta up above explains it better than i did btw, i really recommend it if you want to look more into gon as a character and why he does some things!
also gon canonically has nightmares... thinks about oomf's killugon nightmare thread.... 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️
