All trainees should have mandatory cultural competency courses before debut: a thread
As an educator in a very multicultural and modern classroom, we have EXTENSIVE training on cultural sensitivity, understanding internal biases, and how these internal attitudes affect the kids we teach. We are encouraged to examine our biases frequently as our attitudes can +
negatively impact how we treat students in slight ways. In fact, a lot of times we may not even realize minor internalized racism when they stem as products of our environment, upbringing, and our own cultural ideals. Sadly, we know how the general society of Korea feels about +
skin tone simply based at their successful market for skin whitening products. It's inevitable this attitude is ingrained in many of our idols. So I honestly believe all trainees, like my job as a teacher, should have mandatory cultural competency classes in the same manner they+
study English or vocal training. It is THAT important. Wrong words are going to hurt millions of fans worldwide. At that point, it doesn't matter if you can sing and dance well. Classes like this can help idols get to the root of their internal biases and re-develop a more+
appropriate attitude in dealing with each other and their fanbase. Idols are role models and comforts for people around the world, meaning they NEED to be culturally competent and sensitive due to their constant interactions with a global audience. Being an idol is their JOB,+
therefore there should put forth the effort to do their job the best they can - more than just performing musically, but in developing culturally competent attitudes in the personas they display, which in turn affects how they interact with their culturally diverse supporters. +
Especially as NCT's entire brand is globalization, this only heightens the importance of being aware of cultural biases and cultivating a sensitive attitude that will not offend or hurt their worldwide fanbase. A good chunk of their success literally depends on it. End thread.
