Media Recommendation Thread #1: Radiant. This French manfra by Tony Valente is not only the first to be published in Japan, but also the first French manga to receive an anime adaptation. What makes this international hit so appealing and why is it one of the best ongoing manga?
The first volume makes Radiant’s appeal apparent but also makes you wonder why it’s well received. A vibrant art style and generic but interesting premise is hampered by constant unfunny humor and annoying MC. Still, the signs of potential the premise holds keep you invested
When I say Radiant becomes exponentially better after the first volume, I mean that shit. Valente’s skill at efficient worldbuilding proves itself with every arc. If you’re familiar with similar magic manga like Magi, you will find yourself right at home in the world of Pharenos
From the Artemis Institute to Rumble Town; from Cyfandir to Bome, each area and their factions are fully explored. While there’s only 108 chapter at the moment, every arc leads to irreversible repercussions that alter the lives of the characters and the state of the world.
Every arc is at least an 8/10, and I’d argue the second major arc is a modern day classic in how it expands the mechanisms, power system, and politics of the world and its characters. The current arc has the potential of also being legendary.
Not only is the world explored, but it is also diverse. Tony highlights the struggles of immigrants, mirroring the conflict in his home country, respectful and beautiful character designs for black characters
When it comes to antagonists, Radiant’s biggest strength is in its factions. Their agendas are clear while allowing room for growth, and whether we’re talking about the Inquisitors, the Domitors, the Baron Merchants, or recently the Mesnie, each member has their own struggles.
With every faction being fleshed out, almost every character whether main, antagonist, or side, receives proper characterization. The MC Seth was annoying at first, but grows with the world around him without compromising his identity.
Tony keeps things dynamic with his cast. Every one in the main group has a unique relationship with each other and go through realistic development as one would expect a friends should. No unnecessary misunderstandings, just honest companionship!
The dynamism in the character writing is something I really want to put emphasis on. It’s something I don’t see a lot in manga. Character traits deemed positive in one situation can ruin friendships and be character’s greatest weakness in another. Characters exhibit multiplicity.
