-the value of food, an analytical thread on whole cake island: 🍰

(1/7)
i really love how food was made a central theme and how its importance was explored during wci. cooking was a topic of divisiveness between sanji and his family and their differing outlooks on hunger, heavily influenced by their experience, made for great conflict. (2/7)
meanwhile food was also something that divided the charlotte family and is a topic of conflict, its importance is highlighted only when in the context of satiating big mom's gluttonous nature. she becomes so blinded by her hunger that she will even take her child's life (3/7)
in contrast, food serves as a vehicle to instead strengthen sanji's and luffy's relationship. while big mom cannot control her gluttony and harms her family, luffy chooses to harness his to protect his crew. he makes it clear that he refuses to be pirate king without sanji (4/7)
i also adore the parallels made between sora, sanji's mom, and luffy. it did not matter to either of them that the food sanji served them was destroyed by the rain and mud. to them, the earnesty and love that he puts into his dishes far outweigh its quality or taste. (5/7)
additionally i adore how sanji's role during this arc was not as a combatant but as a chef. he used his skills as a cook to save his crew by satiating big mom with the perfect wedding cake. he lets his talent speak for him & it gives us a lot of incredible character moments (6/7)
lastly, this final panel marks the conclusion of the whole cake island arc beautifully, for it reiterates one of sanji's and zeff's core values- their purpose as a chef is to simply cook and serve all who are hungry, all other business comes secondary. (7/7) 🎂
