2) In America there has always been a temptation to overestimate the identification of the President with the Church as if he were the High Priest of the nation. The American president is a secular office & he does not represent the church. He is the head of a government.
3) Piper is correct that outward sins like murder arise out of sinful hearts that hate. He is also correct that Xian witness needs to be concerned about the latter & not just the former. But the federal govt. is not the church & it is not a means of sanctification.
4) The purpose of civil law is to restrain the cruel & powerful & to protect the weak. If somehow the church could change the hearts of the abortionists that would be tremendous. In the meantime, however, it is the job of the civil authority to restrain evil actions by law.
5) I don't expect the fed. govt. to be a Xian example of godliness. What I expect is that it not violate the natural law just b/c it is too vacillating & weak to stand up to bullies. I expect a form of justice which always falls short of true justice precisely b/c it is civil.
6) The perfect justice of God in which right actions arise out of a pure heart is possible only for the Redeemed & then only incompletely in this present age. The New Heavens & New Earth will see this perfect justice in action. In the meantime, the church bears witness to it.
7) One party promises to expand/entrench legalized murder paid for by taxpayers. The other seeks restraints on murder by legal means. Only 1 is anti-abortion & the diff. seems pretty black & white. That fact is not the fault of Republicans; it the choice made by the Democrats.
