One of the (many) reasons it is difficult to put much store in what Kenney says is that he continually convolutes his own rationalizations because he is incapable of apologizing or admitting an error. This curriculum thing for example: 1/5
Today, in his phone-in interview he extols the academic credentials and Ph.D of his hand-picked ‘expert’, then in the next breath, denigrates those who ‘style themselves as curriculum experts’ who, he fails to note, *also* have impressive credentials—the difference 2/5
being that what they are experts in and have degrees in (including Ph. Ds) IS curriculum, their subject expertise, and also pedagogy. It could not be clearer that Kenney’s expert does not have the first idea of how children learn and is unfamiliar with 21st C classrooms. 3/5
And ALL of this on the heels of Kenney’s remarks that “a trade certificate has every bit as much value and merit as an academic degree” while insisting that Harper’s kid deserves to be paid more than most tradespeople in Alberta *because* of his academic credentials. 4/5
I mean, which is it? We’re supposed to revere academic degrees—but only some and not others—and only if it doesn’t get in the way of rhetoric designed to divide Albertans and scapegoat certain groups. 5/5
