If anything good comes out of this pandemic and this terrible period of British history, it has to be an equality agenda. And it won’t be this government that will advocate that.
Covid has brought into sharp relief our inequalities. Inequalities across social divides and across ethnic divides.
Test, trace and isolate was always going to fail if no real genuine support was given to help ppl isolate. Who gets a test if it means they might not be able to put food on the table?
Our frontline workers have suffered the impact heavily. But by underfunding the NHS & our social care system we put immense and unfair pressure on these ppl.
Communities of Bame origin have suffered disproportionately, without a clear understanding of why.. but suggestions of structural racism cannot be ignored.
And then children. Suddenly it’s unaffordable to feed children in the middle of a pandemic.. and yet we find £billions to pay for a failing private test and trace system.
But if we can’t afford to feed our children, what hope have we got in any fight to maintain the high standards in food, welfare.. and working standards?
A government that won’t feed the hungry is only going to pounce on cheap food, cheap labour, and lower standards.
So this government is not at all about levelling up or down. It’s never going to be level: this government is all about cheap standards, structural inequalities and creaming off the profits for their inner circle.
We all deserve so much better. And our children most of all.
