it’s one thing to note that someone has a particular tendency or a blind spot, but to point to, say, 1 out of 100 Jacobin articles (or CA articles!) and say “HA! THIS IS WHAT THEY *REALLY* THINK!” is...the opposite of pattern recognition

somewhat relatedly, book & TV & film criticism is rife with someone taking a screenshot or a paragraph and yelling “AHA!” rather than analyzing the flow of the whole narrative. or, these people get mad at the critics who are still trying to look at the whole of the work

this tendency is apolitical also! liberals do it, reactionaries do it, tumbleristas and leftist posters do it. everyone is so invested in whether a piece of art is Good or Bad, and here is the single screenshot that proves it
