It’s heartbreaking to read so many non-mexican critics giving Michel Franco’s New Order all sorts of praise after they clearly did not understand its sociopolitical context.

This is a thread designed to politely inform why this movie is so deeply racist and toxic.
First of all, a huge shout out to the wonderful @orlamango from @SeventhRow because she’s been the ONLY non-mexican critic that actually understood how white and fake New Order’s ‘social commentary’ is.

"The fear of protest lives in the heart of the film where it’s portrayed as a synonym of irrational chaos and not as a natural consequence of disparity."
“Criticizing in this way the escalation of crime stemmed from Felipe Calderon’s war on narco, underscores the director’s worry about what would happen with the elite, when in fact it’s the working class the one that has had to survive military and police abuse from decades”
“In this film, the poor, the unprotected and those who work for the rich are one-dimensional figures, capable of utter hypocritical evil or uncompromising generous goodness.”

One of many brilliant sentences from this review.
By the way, critics living in México and Latinamerica were denied access to watch New Order at TIFF, Chicago and other film festivals. At first I thought this was distribution, but after a while it was clear that the producers only wanted foreigner's takes on the film.
“In our national context where women have come together to fight for a safer country for them, the film NEW ORDER uses the color green - symbol of the fight for legal abortion in our country - as a sign to point danger and to distinguish those who seek to destablize the world.”
It’s important to know this because New Order has already been shortlisted to represent Mexico in the International Oscar race. And since foreigners have spoken so highly of it, it’s getting a lot of international buzz already.

My country shouldn't be represented by this.
We've got wonderful cinema. Films about identity, our subcultures, immigration, belonging and racism.

Unlike New Order, films like Esto no es Berlín, El Obligo de Guie'dani, I Carry You With Me and Ya no estoy aquí are urgent tales that speak about México, about our struggles.
While we are here, I strongly encourage you to watch the documentary EL GUARDIÁN DE LA MEMORIA ( @GuardianMemory_). IMO one of the best mexican films of the last decade. It will explain to you exactly what is happening at the border.
