The Nigerian army dismissed local and international publications reporting on the #LekkiMassacre as "fake news".

My investigation for @DFRLab looked at the open source evidence placing the Nigerian army in the presence of injured protesters at the scene. https://twitter.com/DFRLab/status/1319327672640688129
Despite the tweets disclaiming reports of the shooting as fake, @AmnestyNigeria confirmed 10 people died at Lekki.

Lagos governor @jidesanwoolu yesterday instituted a fact finding committee to investigate the Army's Terms of Engagement following an "unfortunate shooting."
For several days, protesters had been blocking Lekki toll gate, costing the city of Lagos an estimated US$70 000 per day in revenue losses.

Despite the cost implications, protesters were peaceful - dancing, singing, sharing cake and observing religious rites.
The first reports of shots occurred at 18:42 local time. This was followed shortly by numerous similar reports, including video footage showing officers converging on the tollgate.
Despite claims that reports of the shooting were "fake news", video footage before and during the shooting show Nigerian army members in the vicinity of injured protesters at the toll gate.
Protesters were enveloped from both the east and western approached to the toll gate, presumably to enforce a curfew imposed on the city of Lagos earlier that day.
