Last season, John Collins was suspended 25 games for drug violations.
19-20 Hawks during those 25 games: 4-21
19-20 Hawks when John Collins played: 15-26
15-26 is not ideal, but it’s certainly better than 4-21, which was tied w/ MIN for the worst 25 game stretch all season.

His defense right now is subpar, having posted weak defensive advanced stats. The Hawks center rotation was Damian Jones, Alex Len, and Bruno Fernando. There was a lot of pressure on JC to be the enforcer down low on defense--he is relatively small for a big at 6’9” and 235 lbs.
However, his rim protection did improve by a decent margin from his 2nd season to his 3rd season—an increase of 1 BPG (.6 in 18-19 -> 1.6 in 19-20) at a lower foul rate. He is also decently switchable in the P&R.
Adding Clint Capela is going to significantly help him. Capela will fill the role of primary rim protector, reducing JC’s workload defensively and allowing him to match up with players more at his size. He is very athletic, which helps him keep up with stretch 4s on the perimeter
The Hawks will be competing for a playoff spot in 2021, and JC will play a big role. Him and Trae are an exciting young duo; that P&R is a thing of beauty. JC provides great energy, and his athleticism is impressive. Don't forget how efficient he is either!
