A lot of people are pouring praise on AEW and the quality of Dynamite. Quite rightly so. This will always be in contrast to WWE you just can’t get away from that but it is also a comparison against history. 1/
Generally we see progress in all fields of fields of humanity. Sport gets more competitive, films get more nuanced and politics get more cutthroat. Wrestling does not see the same progress due to the previous WWE monopoly. 2/
The years of WWE apathy and malaise towards creative but enthusiasm and ferocity towards money and squeezing out the competition has meant wrestling has not seen the same level of progression and raising of quality. I’m not talking about in-ring talent, this is pristine. 3/
All AEW are doing is implementing an ambitious creative process with collaboration and self-correction whilst actually listening to criticism. At the same time is seems they are using storytelling tropes from TV and other types of media. 4/
This is no great idea. It’s blindingly obvious. There has never been as great a resource as the diversity and standard of other entertainment. You’d be an absolute fool to fail to learn from ‘higher’ forms of entertainment. 5/
This is what happens in the most competitive fields such as business or sport. Sam Allerdyce and Arsene Wenger revolutionalised English football by implementing technological coaching and health standards respectively by observing American sports. 6/
It’s this willingness to learn, respond to expert feedback and generally be humble in order to be ambitious that makes me think AEW will continue to improve. 7/7
