I’m not exaggerating to say that I am heartbroken over what I have been reading today, firstly at ministers voting against providing free meals for the poorest, most disadvantaged and most vulnerable children in society (more)
And then secondly by people doing the whole “well, don’t have kids if you can’t afford to feed them,” this whole narrative around the ‘undeserving’ poor, which I find utterly offensive. Seriously, have a word with yourself (more)
Poverty doesn’t travel in a straight line, and people don’t just recklessly have kids they can’t afford. This is such a vile and classist statement. Many people don’t foresee a world where you would face the dreadful reality of not being able to feed your children (more)
We had free school meals as kids because my dad one day just literally fucked off and absolved himself from paying child support. My parents were married, my mother worked only part time to look after us. So the state had to help (more)
We were luckier than some of the kids at our school, for whom that free meal was their only proper meal of the day. I remember telling my mum that the free school meals kids were separated into a different queue and her trying not to cry (more)
Literally nobody is putting their kids through this to buy booze or big TVs. It’s an ugly myth. People have possessions because they could once afford them. It’s not an indicator of a person’s situation or how much or little actual money they have at any given time (more)
Also what can equally get to fuck are those comments from people who are like “well I forage/bulk buy etc. and live on very little.” Good for you, love but you clearly don’t live on a council estate poorly served by public transport that has one corner shop (more)
Or have the barrier of a £4 supermarket delivery charge, or a minimum spend. You might have time to cook instead of working multiple jobs. You might be lucky enough not to have long-term illness or depression (more)
You may have proper cooking facilities or even an actual *home.* we shouldn’t still have to spell it out to you. Let’s also not forget that we are talking about vulnerable CHILDREN. It’s an absolute disgrace.
