I hate the phrase “passion economy” so much because so many creators are monetizing on platforms like OnlyFans, YouTube, IG, TikTok etc as a way to get by. Many “creators” are people who have been shut out of the traditional labor market. It’s not “passion” it’s survival for many
Many young ppl aspire to be creators and associate independent work w/ stability b/c they see a crumbling system around them where “traditional” job opps are waning. They know there’s no opp for promotion or to make more than min wage, so they gamble w/ trying to make it online
This too https://twitter.com/caseynewton/status/1319318973544976385
In reality, being a creator/influencer is grueling work, until you make it big (& even then) ur incredibly beholden to the whims of tech platforms that have traditionally undervalued creators. Yes, for some ppl it’s their life’s passion, but many are just trying to pay the bills
