In fact, if there's one business model to study, study Chris Brennan's. Chris started off with a social media platform where I met him "Horoscopic Astrology" on MYSPACE. (I know! I've known the dude a long time.)
From there, he built his own blog and platform, including for classes. Launched his own podcast that he again used across multiple platforms (will explain more), cultivated his own email lists/groups, all while writing his nearly 1000 page book...
...and giving talks at conferences & national small astro groups where he would also try out parts of his book and lesson plans. The net result is that he's one of the most powerful astrologers of his generation & a few others, actually.
As of right now, Steve Forrest, who also built a school and published his own books, might have as much public leverage without mainstream media support. Even then, folks like Chani Nicholas and Susan Miller first built their own platforms before getting mainstream attn.
Yes, I'm keenly aware that all of the people I've mentioned so far are White. But the model still works. Notice how Mecca Woods has been building her own "empire" as well. What's key is NOT STICKING TO ONE PLATFORM!
You don't own your content on Twitter, FB, IG or YouTube. You do with your own newsletter, page, and audio. Think how you're building an institution, a business rather than just promoting your damn brand.
Use your video and audio across multiple platforms. If you write for someone else, be sure you leverage that content on your own pages first and NEVER STOP building your own business because you're working/writing for someone else.
For Chris, the net result is that he can direct more people into virtual or physical chairs with one podcast than some 40 year old orgs could do with a month of daily blasts to their dying audiences.
I've been "on the inside" for 8 years now. I've learned and am even learning more what's failing and what's succeeding and with whom. That's been my intention as well as promoting more quality astrological education.
Position yourself for success and stop thinking that shit is on accident. It's not. And plan for the long haul. The Chris Brennan you see now has been in the making for decades. And the same for nearly every other astrologer you've known about.
