in this thread i will take a line from every song in mono and analyze its meaning in the way that i interpret it and relate it back to why mono is one of the best things ever created and is literal free therapy

yearning that many and namjoon himself had/have for success and to achieve your goals. although one may wish and wish for this to come true, once achieved it is easy to feel alone, trapped, and confused.

in this song namjoon discusses his internal struggle with conflicting feelings about seoul. he mentions positive attributes of the city but also mentions things he has grown to question such as-

“the cold parks pretending to be warm.” he says if love and hate are the same words than he loves seoul, meaning that his relationship with this place is complex and has both good and bad. many can relate to this feeling of being so far and disconnected from where you grew up-
but it still having a special place in your heart for it because it’s the place you are most familiar.

here the night is described as where one is free from the stress of everyday life, when there are no pressures and when you feel at most peace. nighttime is our battery to recharge.-

he also says “when moon rise, its your time” which emphasizes the tranquility that night is able to bring to whom he references as “moonchild” throughout the song.
4. badbye ♡

badbye is a clear play on “good bye” and signifies the ending of a bad experience. whether it be with a friend, a significant other, yourself, or anything this line is easy to relate to because as often as we use the phrase “good bye” the situations are-

not always “good” and in fact can be sad. this provides a better descriptor for the ending of something that may carry unfavorable heavy emotional feelings.

as namjoon says, sometimes you feel that you “need to do so much better" and you ask yourself “do you only amount to this?" often you want to strive for better-

for yourself and as namjoon says your “ideal and reality” may be far apart, but what’s important is to constantly work toward bridging the gap and meeting in the middle, as he describes.

in this song namjoon says how bad things happen no matter who you are, and at some point you will face hardship. it is what makes us human, the idea that we all share the feeling of pain.-

we can relate to each other in that way. although, it is a part of the human experience it is important to keep pushing forward. rainbows only come after rainfall.
7. forever rain ♡

its easy to feel alone in such a big world but rain taps on your window letting you know that it is there by your side. its language sometimes soft and melodic-

or hard and violent, but nevertheless there and present. namjoon then goes on to say “and i answer, I’m still a hostage of life” which relates back to his line in tokyo about Pinocchio and feeling trapped. here though, there is rain that provides comfort.
[end] mono is such a special gift from namjoon that we all should cherish. he gives us comfort and reassures us that everything will be okay and also provides a space to empathize with him. thank you for this masterpiece joonie. happy 2 year anniversary to mono!
