Today in parliament, Lords call for UK government intervention to protect the rights of former Guantánamo detainees facing forced repatriation from UAE to Yemen - where they are at great risk of facing torture and persecution. (a thread)
Lord Collins "These people have been arbitrarily detained, denied right to a free trial and are now threatened with transportation to a place where they may be tortured and killed. I think there is a clear opportunity for the UK government to raise concerns direct with the UAE"
Baroness Northover "These 18 men were cleared for release by 6 US security agencies and transferred to the UAE on the understanding they would be reintegrated into society. Will the government oppose their continued detention in the UAE and call for their release?"
Baroness D'Souza "UN experts have expressed deep concern about 18 previous Guantánamo detainees. They have already undergone 2 decades of mistreatment. Will the government call on the UAE to release these men from arbitrary detention and the threat of forcible repatriation?”
