funny thing about mono: when forever rain came out, I didnt think of looking at the tracklist again; I just listened to it and assumed it was the first track of the mixtape, because a rain washes over everything and starts things afresh, you know?

but then I listened to the tracks in order, starting from tokyo, and I realized that i took up the wrong angle. So basically, the mixtape begins in Tokyo, he's in a different place, being someone else other than him, and he's been this person for so long that his +

realities are mixing, he cant differentiate between what he likes and what he doesn't, because as a different person he has to accommodate for all the things irrespectively; he says, he's homesick and he wants to go back home so that he can try finding his own self again.

Then he reaches Seoul, a city where again he can't understand whether he hates or loves, or is it the same thing again? He hates it because of how it's changed him, but he also loves it because here is where he discovered his artistry and became rm from rap monster.

He's living Seoul out, because he's an inadvertent part of its glitz and glamour as a celeb, he's leaving seoul because at the end he could never truly become a part of the materialistic notion that fame brings, and this fame is seoul to him; it's the big city.

Next we come to moonchild, where he slowly unravels his identity to us. He's associated himself with nights, where the paths to go ahead in life are unclear. Joon's success has come to him with a lot of pains, hardships, and the loss of normalcy, so he says to us

that we are children of the moon, who stumble around in the dark, fight the pain, till we discover out true purpose and paths. Don't cry, because only the darkest of nights is when the moon shines, to show you a path to your success.

Now, badbye might seem like a pause to this story but it isnt. For me, it feels like joon is killing one of his personas off, he's saying goodbye to the hunger, the unrefined anger he felt in the beginning of his career, as a child who just wanted to be heard.

kill me softly, have me scattered as fragments so that you can never get me back. Joon is having a conversation with his old self, and his old self weeps because he couldn't stay. He cries for losing a part of himself. This is a sad goodbye, hence badbye.

Now, joon has just lost another part of himself, so he comes to uhgood. He knows that, at the end of the day, loneliness doesnt come because of lack of people around him, it comes because of a hole in our hearts, with our selves craving for more understanding of our lives.

After losing himself again and again, he once again finds himself out of place. He keeps repeating, all I need is me. But it's not enough, everything in life feels stuck, and my ideal self is so far away from me, I already know I'm gonna face defeat even without knowing what +

+ the true purpose of my life was. However, he will not give up and he will reach towards creating an ideal self, so he can have a better understanding of his own self and be less lonely.

Now, this process of having better expectations from ourselves and being kinder to ourselves is tough, so he tells himself, everything goes, in the next song.
All through everythingoes, he consoles himself by saying that even the darkest and loneliest of these times will pass.

Now, as he has decided to take it all as it comes and goes, we finally reach the end of the mixtape, forever rain.
He says, I wish the rain continues, because I need more time. So that people can keep looking away from me and I can continue to rebuild myself at my own pace.

Also, he says it's all slow, everything is slow because when it rains, it's like all of normalcy is interrupted. People on the streets are busy with themselves, trying to protect themselves and scurrying to shelter.

so he says, in this time no one will look at me. I will use this time to catch my breath, and let the rain wash over everything and give me a new beginning. He is here, ready to love the whole world as he is, but the world is ever changing and dynamic. Its expectations +

keep changing, and it doesnt give him the time to heal and change accordingly. So he asks for the rain, so that he feels comfortable in the slowed down world, and he takes the time to heal and comfort himself, all on his own, with his passion and purpose of life +

giving him a reason to live and love, no matter what the whole world throws at him.

So, is mono sad?
No. I know that the notion of it forever raining to let him heal might sound sad, but it's not. For me, it's like Namjoon is accepting that maybe he will always need the rain so that it gives him time to live at his own pace.
He has accepted that he will heal +

At his own pace, while the world busies itself with its own cares. He will not live as the world wants, he will live for the thing that's chaining him to his life, his music, his family, BTS, his purpose of living.

So, moral of the story? Heal at your own pace. The expectations of the world are of no concern, what matters is that you live, you survive and you heal at your own pace. Your path might be tough and rocky, just like his was, but remember that you're a moonchild. Your darkest

night will give you your brightest successes.
