I know I’ve been saying this for more than a year but Facebook needs to take Twitter and Google’s lead and ban microtargeted political ads until they can fact-check and limit harmful use. Their ad archive transparency approach is a red herring to protect FB’s toxic biz model.
good grief, timely to my point ⬆️... Facebook exec just acknowledged their hypersensitive political ad archive wasn't working (for researchers to pull all ads)... nearly 90 minutes after a reporter went public... and 12 days before the election. https://twitter.com/markscott82/status/1319277437629329413?s=20
Again, this was why regulators and lawmakers who investigated Facebook's harms in multiple nations made strong recommendations... https://twitter.com/jason_kint/status/1315260959460593666?s=20
It's also likely why Trump Team's hero Brad Parscale and his operator freaked out when it leaked Facebook was also considering. Put aside WSJ reports that board member Peter Thiel and top DC lobbyist, Joel Kaplan, were pressing hard against any moves. https://twitter.com/jason_kint/status/1197539581559812097?s=20
The chair of the election commission, former and current facebook employees, open letters in the NYT, significant press attention, nothing could move Zuckerberg@Facebook on this decision. Remember this, Zuckerberg and his leadership own it - 100%: https://twitter.com/jason_kint/status/1193200255107575808?s=20

and @juliacarriew, who has reported extensively on the harms, had this amazing thread. It's precisely why FB ad archive cannot go down during key windows, independent academics can't be restricted from full access (& why they still need '16 data to study). https://twitter.com/jason_kint/status/1222546729079312386?s=20
This is now relevant to this thread from yesterday about Facebook and microtargeted political ads. Facebook’s refusal to change its rules concurrent with blocking researchers monitoring it gives me a very, very bad feeling. https://twitter.com/jason_kint/status/1319768618092138502
