I know Amy Coney Barrett. She& #39;s part of my extended family. And sure, she& #39;s a nice person. But rushing to confirm a #SCOTUS nominee - particularly one who& #39;s opinions are extreme-right - during the election & without passing meaningful #COVID19 relief is cruel & undemocratic. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🧵" title="Thread" aria-label="Emoji: Thread">
I might upset some family members tweeting about this - even family members at other end of the political spectrum from Amy (as I am) have wanted to defend her because “she’s so nice!” (which she is). But I& #39;ve read her opinions & watched the hearings. And nice isn& #39;t the point.
The fact that Amy& #39;s willing to accept the blessing of a nomination from Donald Trump and all he represents, particularly in this deeply partisan nomination process in the midst of the election tells me that I must override my inclination to give her a pass because she’s family.
Amy& #39;s views on the law would put so many members of our society – including members of our family – at risk: from those who rely the Affordable Care Act for life-saving healthcare, to low-wage workers and non-white workers, to LGBTQ people.
So much is at stake in this decision: the protection of voter rights, esp. for people of color, incarcerated people, & the poor; accountability for police violence against Black people; & the ability of our government to comprehensively address the climate crisis. And much more.
So I& #39;ll say it again (and I know I have many family members who agree with me): as part of Amy Coney Barrett& #39;s family, I fully and wholeheartedly oppose her confirmation to the Supreme Court, and call on ALL Senators to vote against her.
