Non-tweeting André Broome and I have a new piece on ‘recursive recognition’ out in @RIPEjournal as part of a special issue on #blindspots led by @GLeBaron @dmugge @JacquelineMBest and Colin Hay. Dr. Dre and yours truly make two points. [1/4] https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09692290.2020.1830827">https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/...
The first is that we shouldn’t exaggerate agency or reify authority as a property of organizational types. A lot of activity in the world economy that IPE studies concerns agreement over what is appropriate knowledge for governance tools. This occurs via forms of enactment. [2/4]
Second, these forms of enactment are increasingly affirmed across organizational types. A private foundation releases a study in issue X, which is then referred to as best practice by an intergovernmental organization, an NGO, a firm, and a global professional service firm. [3/4]
We should pay attention to recursive recognition in how governance tools are made, including how they reinforce asymmetries in governing, including issues of gender, race, & climate explored by others in the issue [4/4] @Prof_JPSingh @MahaRafiAtal @MatPaterson @ElisabethPruegl
