If you really want to understand Kashmir issue, you must understand Pakistan’s invasion of Jammu and Kashmir on Oct 22nd, 1947. I highly recommend @rhinohistorian ‘s excellent book ‘India’s Wars- A Military History’ to understand what happened and how India emerged victorious.
Remember those who talk about plebiscite, UN intervention etc never mention Pakistan’s invasion of Kashmir in 1947- a well planned conspiracy to annex Jammu and Kashmir. This operation called ‘Operation Gulmarg’ was multi-pronged strategy to annex Kashmir with the help of Tribals
When Pakistan was formed, the very first thing it did was to launch operation Gulmarg - a conspiracy to use lashkars made up of Tribals to attack Kashmir. They were fully aided and given weapons by Pakistan army. As soon as Pakistan was formed they started using non state actors
Lashkars raised by Pakistani Army were told to fight against ‘infidels’ in a holy war. So Jihad in Kashmir began in August of 1947.What we saw in 1989 was Jihad 2.0.Pakistan started fighting Jihad as soon as it was born. It made sense too because Pak is the original Islamic State
Remember Indian forces could not intervene until instrument of Accession was signed which was signed on Oct 26. From 20th Oct to 26th October, Pakistan Army had already committed several genocides in Muzaffarabad and Baramula. Thousands of civilians were butchered.
Pak Tribals looted and burnt Baramula for 3 days. They found so much to loot in that prosperous district of Baramula that some of them took the loot back to Pakistan and came back for another round. These 3 days in Baramula are crucial to understand Pakistan’s view about jihad
Hindu, Sikh and even Christian women were abducted and raped and killed on Baramula massacre. Those three days that Pakistanis spent looting and raping delayed their advance to Srinagar. Early morning on 27th October India dispatched troops to save Kashmiris from the genocide.
Long before what Pakistani Army did in East Pakistan they had already perfected in Jammu and Kashmir. First genocide they oversaw was in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani Army has never won any wars. But they have successfully committed genocides in Kashmir and east Pakistan.
I request @PMOIndia to do two things soon: 1) Ensure First war of Kashmir is not referred to as ‘Tribal invasion’. It wasn’t a tribal invasion. It was Pakistani Army’s first attempt to annex J&K. 2) officially recognize and remember the civilian victims of 1947 massacre.
