I’m genuinely confused by American-born Latinxs’ obsession with, like, consumable trinkets—I’ve been unfollowed for mango & Café Bustelo slander—like, why are these uncompromisable identity markers??
am I trying to start drama on the TL? PERHAPS
I’m losing followers right now lmfaooooooooo
Like, the phenomenon is fine, it happens, but the source of my confusion is the *ferocity* with which these food items-turned-symbols are protected. ppl really act like you shot their abuelita if you don't like Café Bustelo!
& thinking out loud, I'm fascinated, cuz I understand cultural exports, i.e. cultures or nations that produce goods to be consumed, & how they eventually becomes a part of cultural identity; but with American-born Latinxs, it's cultural *imports* that begin to define. See: Takis
