Brief thread about the difference among:
1) extracted voter registration data
2) the voter registration system
3) how you voted
4) vote tabulation systems
1 includes your name, address, some contact info, sometimes political party, a list of elections you voted in. It is public data, and even though it feels creepy that it's out there, it is almost never evidence of a hack, breach or any kind of election compromise.
2 is the live database where voter registrations are kept (and can be modified). It would be bad if a hacker got into it. There is some evidence of access in past cases, but in general not evidence of data being changed. Most importantly, 1 DOES NOT imply a breach of 2
The data of type 1 that's publicly available is usually dumped into a flat file from a system of type 2. If I email you a text file, you can't use that to modify the database I dumped it from.
3 is private, it's why you have the double envelope on your mail ballot and the curtain at the voting booth, who you voted for is not recorded in the same place as your name, it is not available on public voter data files.
4 honestly I do not know a lot about vote tabulation, except that it's totally independent from 1-3, and someone knowing eg party registration for every voter DOES NOT IN ANY WAY mean they can compromise vote tabulation systems
