Is this about a rocket or our caregiving supports?

“The problem began with faulty design and increased as [we] first failed to recognize it as a problem, then failed to fix it and finally treated it as an acceptable risk.”

The last time women's employment to population ratio was this bad was 10/1986.

It took 10 years to get from there to pre-recession levels.

Recovery isn't going to be quick or happen automagically.

3/
Women have been hammered this recession for 2 reasons

Women have been pushed out of jobs—women are over-represented in industries with the most losses
Women have been pulled out of workforce by caregiving duties

More jobs lost, weaker recovery

4/
This is the first recession where women have lost more jobs than men since @bls_gov began collecting employer data on women (1964).

5/
Women of color have been hit hardest.

White women have lost the most jobs (3.9million), but when we control for population, Black women have been

a) more likely to lose jobs
b) less likely to find work

It’s time to talk about men.

We’re not doing our part.
That’s especially clear the last few months.

Women dropping out of the labor force a little in august and a ton in September.

In both months labor force changes were >600k worse for women than men

So what do we do?

&

SUPPRESS THE F***ING VIRUS, HOW ARE WE STILL TALKING ABOUT THIS?!?!

After that, we need to get kids in school and childcare
đź‘ŹSđź‘ŹAđź‘ŹFđź‘ŹEđź‘ŹLđź‘ŹYđź‘Ź

[note this requires a lot of $$$$ both to make schools safe and to keep remaining child care centers in business]

THIS IS CRUCIAL.

IT WILL NOT BE ENOUGH.

9/
There are ~6 million fewer women employed than in February
Many of their former employers out of business

Reopening schools will not magically create millions of new jobs.

We need bold plans that center women and caregiving in our recovery

Is this worth it?

YES

Framing women’s progress as zero-sum is dumb. Please stop doing this!

Women are the majority of college graduates; women are the majority of breadwinners.

Restoring women’s careers will grow our economy faster.

We need:
-Job creation that centers women
-paid leave
-qualiity, affordable child care for all
-health care & retirement security
-support for caregivers

My colleagues have been working on this FOR YEARS
